Learning Outcomes

  1. Analyze film in the American tradition
  2. Think comparatively and critically about the tensions between the studio system and the auteur.
  3. Learn basic ingredients of narrative film story-telling and the relations of story, plot and structure to time and memory in the filmmaking process.
  4. Gain an overview of the history of American cinema from 1945 to the present through the lens of these specific directors.
  5. Explore the system in which American films are produced and how this principally commercial enterprise affects style and content of films.
