Notes

The course first introduces students with the concept of inequality—both vertical (between individuals and households) and horizontal (between groups). It then looks at different types of inequality (economic, social, and political) and how these inequalities affect individual and social welfare. It deals with three sets of questions: 1. How does inequality manifests within and across countries and over time? 2. Whether and how inequality affects the distribution of political power ? 3. How do policies affect inequalities, and what types of policies can foster sustainable development?

Learning Outcomes

  1. Students will be able to identify theory and use it to recognize and compare policies between European states (assessed via classroom participation and discussion)
  2. Students will be able to formulate arguments within policy areas (assessed via two written assignments)
  3. Students will be able to summarize complex arguments in their own words, and discuss their significance (assessed via blackboard assignments and the final exam)
